Gibt es Rassismus wirklich? Die Frage habe ich mir schon oft gestellt. Ich habe in meinem Leben wenige Situationen direkt miterlebt und wahrscheinlich bin ich nicht besonders sensibilisiert. Heute lief mir ein Zeitungsartikel in der Zeit über den Weg, der mir meine Frage beantwortet hat. Ein weißer Journalist färbt sich seine Haut und zieht ein Jahr durch Deutschland. Seine Beobachtungen sind sehr lesenswert – wenn auch erschreckend. “Ich bin kein Schwarzer, ich kann aus meiner Haut wieder raus. Trotzdem fühle ich mich gedemütigt.” Zeit sich zu sensibilisieren, sich zu engagieren und Zivilcourage zu zeigen!

Read through the statistics about blacks in the USA. Two of the sentences ae not true. Which do you think they are? Check with your teacher.
- In 2005 black unemployment was 10,8 %, more then double that of white unemployment at 4,7 %.
- Over 70 % of whites own their homes compared with less than 50 % of blacks.
- A black person is about twice as likely to die from disease, accident or murder than a white person is.
- On average, blacks live 15 years less than whites do.
- Blacks are three times more likely to be jailed than whites.
- The financial value of a black household is 10 times less than that of a white one.
- About 24 % of black families live below the poverty line, three times more than the white population.
- Thogether Bill Gates and Larry Elision, both white, have more wealth than the combined wealth of all 36 million blacks in America
- In 1860, 98 % of all Blacks in America worked for white people. In 2001, 62 % of all blacks in America still work for white people.
- An estimated 12.6 % of all black men in their late 20s are in prision, compared to 1.7 % of white men in the same age group.
